All students at Farrer Primary School learn Japanese. Students from kindergarten to Year 6 receive 45 minutes to one hour per week. Our goal is to give children the enjoyable experience of learning another language while developing intercultural understanding to deepen their connection to other cultures.
Learning a language also helps improve memory, develop problem solving and critical thinking skills, enhances concentration, the ability to multitask and develop better listening skills.
We use artefacts, stories, games, songs, videos and various technologies to give students a rich learning experience. Students develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing Japanese. We see language and culture as intertwined, so our language experiences often give insight into Japanese culture, from everyday life to annual festivities in the Japanese calendar.
Farrer Primary School students have many opportunities to connect with Japan in meaningful ways. There are various events that students at Farrer have the chance to participate in, including the Farrer Japanese Fun Day (whole school participation).
